Peaceful and private, as you head up the cul-de-sac your eyes are drawn magnetically to the view. Looking out across Cowbridge, you can imagine sitting on your balcony just watching the world pass you by. Even though you’ve not stepped inside, the exterior of this home tells you that what is awaiting you inside is a little bit special.

Originally a bungalow, the owner’s mother redesigned the entire property with the help of a local architect. The design went on to win an eco-award from Building Control 13 years ago due to its underfloor heating, special glass, and a design that sees light pour into the house from varying angles. Having fallen in love with the design herself, the owner purchased the house from her mother and has loved what the home has given her and her family over the years.

The beautiful Spanish marble that greets you as you arrive is seen throughout the ground floor and brings the whole open-plan layout together. The beauty of this design is such that, even though it’s open plan, it can easily be configured to create separate spaces.

The living room is dominated by the large windows, which drinks in the view and brings the outside in. Three steps take you to an upper level, which is currently being used as a home office space.

Off this you will find the family room, a private space, cosy and generous, with patio doors leading onto a terrace. This is certainly a spot where you can relax, no matter what the weather. A perfect setting for a winter’s day in front of the fire, or with the doors open in the summer, taking your morning coffee on the terrace with a picture perfect view to entertain you. “The kitchen is amazing, it has granite worktops, lots of cupboard space and a bay window that overlooks the garden,” the owner expresses. The kitchen is somewhere you can see yourself enjoying spending time in, and certainly has plenty of room for when you’re entertaining. Ideally, the kitchen flows to the dining area, which opens onto the huge garden room, with each window giving you a different perspective of the garden. “The garden is bigger than people think, they’re quite surprised when they get out there and it’s a sun trap. You have the patio or the raised lawn area to enjoy. The patio gets the sun all day because it’s south facing.”

The garden offers you a lot of privacy with its high wall and borders of trees and shrubs. Easy to maintain, it’s perfect for those with busy lives but also provides a blank canvas for the more green-fingered.

Framing the entrance to the family room is the staircase, a real feature in the middle of the ground floor. Moving upstairs, you will find three double bedrooms. The master has a wonderful sized en-suite with a jacuzzi bath and separate shower. The main bedroom is blessed with plenty of storage, the stand-out feature for a house in this location. “I love the balcony in the main bedroom, it looks over Cowbridge and beyond.” The other two bedrooms are full of character with sloped ceilings and unusual angles. They also benefit from a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, which again has a bath and shower.

With only a small number of houses on the entire cul-de-sac, each of them different, it’s a lovely place to live. “The beach isn’t very far away, nor the mountains. You can walk to Cowbridge, and Cardiff is only a 25-minute drive away. You can be in West Wales within an hour and a half, and with the M4 being so easy to access it’s a great location for commuters.”

If you’re new to the area, let us tell you a little about the wonderful town that is Cowbridge. Known for its array of award-winning independent and boutique shops, it’s an old Roman town surrounded by parks, restaurants, pubs and high street names. With a thriving and friendly community there is such a warm welcome as you explore. This small town hosts a vibrant programme of events and festivals throughout the year that bring locals and visitors together. You will also find a leisure centre, library, the renowned Cowbridge College, and let’s not forget the sheep market.

Heading back to the property, there is still a lot of potential for you to put your own stamp on it. Apart from reconfiguring the downstairs, you could even make the family room into a fourth bedroom. There is also lapsed planning permission and drawings for a proposed extension to the side of the house, creating a utility area and another downstairs room. With so many possibilities, all you need is the vision.

No matter how you decide to make this house your home, there is one thing that can’t be changed and that the current owner will miss above everything else: “The views, because I’ll never get views like that.” You can’t truly experience what this property has to offer until you can see what we see, hear the tranquillity, and feel the warmth this home exudes. This is one unique home that will bring you and your family so much joy.
