As soon as you walk down the path to the front door you will know you have come to view a truly
special property – in fact, it could be your dream home. Owning this house was actually the
childhood dream of one of the owners; his aunt had lived in the house for 40 years and, when she
decided to move, he jumped at the chance to finally call it his own. Yes, it needed work, but before
your mind starts to picture the ‘before’, let us tell you that it was nothing that you could expect. His
auntie had a property in Spain and had chosen to decorate the interior of this house in the style of a
Spanish ranch – not to their taste, the new owners started work on transforming it into what you see today
There are only two houses like this in the whole of Roath, which is just one of the reasons why this
home is special. From the beautiful stained-glass windows that stream shards of colourful light into
the spacious hallway, to the open-plan design at the back of the house, this home has been
thoughtfully and stylishly restored . “We designed this house to suit us as a family; we have five
children and I wanted a space where we could all without feeling confined. Traditional properties
tend to be dark and have internal rooms, we wanted an open-plan space to keep the family together"
The extension at the back of the house provides an open-plan kitchen and social space that certainly
has the wow factor, with the high-quality luxurious kitchen designed for someone who loves to cook.
“I love everything about the kitchen, I think it’s my favourite feature of our home. When we moved
here, because we knew it would be the heart of the home we invested in a Neptune kitchen from
TopStak in Cowbridge. It was a huge expense but worth every penny. I cook every single day and the
kitchen still looks as good as when it was fitted. It has such a timeless elegance but is also really
practical. I love my pantry/larder cupboard, sad but true.” We love it too!
Just off the kitchen is the utility space, “my boys play rugby and you can imagine the state of them
after a game, head to toe mud, but there is a side gate which means they can come straight into the
utility and I can throw everything into the washing machine.” It’s the thought of all the practicalities
of family life that make this incredible property the most wonderful and attractive home; in the
words of the owner: “I wanted this house to make my life easier.”
As you walk into the garden it’s hard to remember you are only a stone’s throw from Newport Road,
with Cardiff centre only 20 minutes’ walk away. All you can hear is the sound of birds and the gush of
the wind; it’s peaceful and calming, you can’t help feeling relaxed. The house is south facing, so you
can enjoy a morning coffee whilst being warmed by the sun, and still grab a sunny garden spot as the
sun sets. Also downstairs is the separate lounge, the ideal space if you want some quiet time away from busy family life.
One of the main features in the garden has to be the gazebo: “ it’s like having an extra room in the
house, it has been used for many a party and with the fire you can keep warm out there even when
there’s a chill in the air.” To add to the sensory experience of the outside space, just wait until the
roses start to bloom, “I’ve planted David Austen Heritage Roses around the front of the house and to
the side of the house, and in the summer the house is just covered in roses, the smell is amazing.”
The upstairs of this home is equally as impressive with its grand spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms on the first floor with the principal bedroom having a stylish en-suite and dressing area above. Stained-glass windows decorate many of the rooms, and you will notice charming little features as you view, but we don’t want to give everything away.
This is a home that has been designed for life, a home that should be filled with laughter, chaos and love.
